AID FOR FARMERS
REFORM LEGISLATION WAITOMO CANDIDATE’S REVIEW British Official Wireless TE KUITI, To-<Jay, Holding out the hope for increased advances under the intermediate credits system, Mr. J. C. Rolleston, Reform candidate for YVaitomo, addressed electors at Te Kuiti last evening. The candidate, in defending the Government, referred to the provisions of the State Advances, rural finance and land settlement, saving that each had been introduced for the benefit of the farming communities. Cheap money had made available for land development and the intermediate credits would help the small farmers to obtain necessary stock. Local body rates were a burden on the farmer, but now the roads were maintained by the petrol tax, which yielded £750,000 a year. Speaking on the native lands question, he said the time would come when the land of the Maoris would be placed on the same footing as European lands so far as rating was concerned. Mr. Rolleston contended that the Government could’* not be blamed for unemployment. The cause of unemployment was due largely to land speculation when there was a land boom. The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
