UNIQUE CARNIVAL

POLITICAL PARTIES COMPETE FUNDS FOR UNEMPLOYED The political fight at Devonport is to be varied on Saturday, if the present arrangements can be carried out. It is very probable that the three political parties will combine to assist in a campaign to raise funds for the unemployed. For this purpose the Melrose Park Committee, which has been busy for several months in raising funds for the formation of the park, has planned an athletic carnival on the Football Domain at Devonport. The big item will be a push-ball contest, and the Labour Party and United Party have signified their intention of supplying a team of eight men to enter the competition. An invitation has been extended the Reform Party to “hold up its end” against its two rivals for popular support. In any case, the Foresters’ Lodge team will include Mr. Alex Harris, M.P., who is a Past Chief Ranger of the lodge. Several other organisations, including the Continuance Party, will assist by “pushing” the big ball. The Rugby and League football teams will also meet for once. The programme includes sprint races for the championship of the North Shore, and several 100 yards runs; folk dancing by 40 pupils of Devonport School; basketball exhibition games by Devonport and Takapuna Grammar Schools, boxing, national dancing, football in costume, place and drop-kicking competitions, etc.
