WHO IS SECRETARY?
WALSH OR JOHNSON SEAMEN NOW HAVE TWO SYDNEY, Tuesday. At a large gathering of Sydney seamen at the Communist Hall to-day the Equity Court’s decision that Mr. Tom Walsh had been properly elected secretary of the union was discussed. It was subsequently stated that the meeting carried a resolution reaffirming its previous decision that Jacob Johnson, now in gaol, is still secretary. Mr. Walsh, who returned to Sydney from Melbourne to-day, said he was delighted with the Court’s decision. It showed that the faction which opposed him could not have its own way, and that Sovietism and- British law could not exist side by side. There had been shameful squandering of the seamen’s money. In the past three years, said Mr. Walsh, upwards of £B,OOO had been spent. When he took office, probably tomorrow, he would do something worth while for the members. As the union had already agreed to pay Johnson’s salary while the latter is in prison, Mr. Walsh said he also would expect his salary to be paid.
