NEW SCENIC ROAD
CONSTRUCTION ON MT. ALBERT QUARRY AN AMPHITHEATRE To the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, the Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, made a proposal for the construction of a motordrive round Mount Albert. The engineer was instructed to make a survey of the mountain for the proposal. Mr. Rhodes said he had been told toy the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J G. Coates, that the existing quarry plant would be removed before Christmas. Mr. Rhodes thought > a motor-drive around the mountain would provide one of the best panoramas in Auckland. He further suggested the formation of a large level area past the scoria pit for parking cars. A level area inside, of about 10 acres, belonged to
the Government. The Prime Minister had undertaken that, if application were made, this land would be handed over to the council. Mr. Rhodes said the question had been before the ratepayers of Mount Albert for 40 years. Six years ago the late Mr. W. F. Massey had been approached, and three years ago Mr. Coates had said that steps to close the quarry would be taken. The council decided to apply for the 10 acres, and to forward its appreciation to Mr. Coates.
The present recreation area in the Mount Albert Domain, consisting of 12& acres, would be encircled by the road. The road would reach the highest point of the mountain, and the quarry site forms a splendid ampitheatre. In the meantime the council has decided to bear the cost of the construction by the Domain Board of a bridle track.
