TAXI-CAB “BILKING”
VANISHING TRICK PLAYED With the return of summer, taxi-cab drivers in Auckland are keeping a eharp look-out for “bilkers,” a class of ]; ople, usually male, which practises t.io disappearing trick after having hired a car. This offence is much more common at holiday times, especially on race days, and n the summer. The “bilker” usually gets the driver to take him to an hotel with two entrances. He says “Just hang on a minute.” and after half an hour’s wait the driver finds that the fare has flown through the back door. Not so long ago a man ordered a taxi to take him to TJelensville. He stopped at a house and asked the driver to wait until he got the money. Upon investigating, the taxi-man found that the house was unoccupied and hat the passenger had gone over the back fence. The fare of £3 12s has never been paid by that gentleman.
