MUSIC, DRAMA, DANCE

CONVENT PUPILS’ CONCERT

A large audience was entertained in the Town Hall concert chamber last evening when a concert and dramatic recital was given by the pupils of St. Mary’s Convent High School, Ponsonby. The programme, arranged with excellent taste, was well varied, and the musical and dancing items were followed by an original Shakespeare recital. In this, excellently spoken extracts were given from the speeches of Ariel, Portia, Juliet, Ophelia, Lady Macbeth and other Shakespearian heroines. The parts were taken by Misses Inez Dean, Lenore Pigott, Esther Rouche, Mary Mathew, D.oncee O’Brien, Raye Murphy, Molly Guiness, Lulu Drysdale, Marie Drysdale and Ruth Somervell.

The musical part of the entertainment included choruses, well-balanced and forceful, and several interesting solo numbers. Misses Margaret Phillips and Irma Kitchen sang “Home to Our Mountains,” and Misses Annabel Long and Millicent O'Grady, the "Miserere’’ chorus, from "II Trovatore.”

The dances and ballets, which were accompanied by classical music, were exquisitely performed.
