PROVINCIAL GOLF

WOMEN’S TITLE FIRST ROUND PLAYED The first round of the Auckland ladies’ provincial golf championship was played at Titirangi this morning, conditions being excellent. There were no surprises, several of the matches being won by good margins, and some of them going to the last green. Mrs. Marshall beat Miss Acheson, 5 and 3. Miss Macfarlane beat Mrs. Deighton, 2 up. Mrs. Dufaur beat Mrs. Buttle, 3 and 1. Mrs. Wilson beat Mrs. Banister, 3 and 1. Mrs. Ferguson beat Mrs. Alison at the 20th. Mrs. Hosking beat Mrs. Beattie, 6 and. 5. Miss D. Horton beat Miss Upton, 1 up. Miss Rathbone beat Miss Easton, 8 and. 7. Mrs. Marshall made no mistakes in putting out Miss Acheson, the only visitor of any note at the tournament. She was out in 41, starting with four 4’s, which put her 3 up, and she was 4 up at the turn. Mrs. Deighton was two up on Miss Macfarlane at the turn, both having played good golf. But on the way home the scoring was very poor. The game came back to square when Mrs. Deighton, with two strokes in hand, played herself a stymie, and lost her opportunity. The match was again all square at the 17th, where a pei'fect approach gave Miss Macfarlane a 4 and a' win, and she followed this by a nice 5 at the 18th, to finish 2 up. Mrs. Dufaur was 5 up on Mrs. Buttle by the 12th. Mrs. Buttle, with a great effort, reduced this to two, but became dormy two down, and lost the 17th.

Playing the best golf of the morning, Mrs. Wilson was out in a splendid 40, and was then two up. Mrs. Banister was putting badly, and a couple of styrpies on the way home saw her eliminated.

Miss Horton was two up on Miss Upton at two stages of the game, but the pair came to the last all square. A brilliant 12ft. putt gave Miss Horton the match on the last green.
