SHIPOWNERS’ RIGHTS

PLACES FOR ENGAGING LABOUR MELBOURNE, Tuesday. The Waterside Workers' Federation to-day asked Chief Judge Dethridge in the Arbitration Court to compel the shipowners to engage labour at the places mentioned in Mr. . Justice Beeby’s award. His Honour ruled that the clause in question did not apply to non-union labour, and that the shipowners are quite within their legal rights in engaging men who do not belong to the federation at whatever places they prescribed. A similar application in regard to Brisbane was dealt with in the same vay.
