TENNIS THRILL

WHEN ANDREWS BEAT HUNTER MARION MACFARLANE BACK “One of the biggest thrills I have ever had was the defeat of Hunter by E. D. Andrews at Wimbledon,” said Miss Marion Macfarlane, of Auckland, on the Ulimaroa yesterday. She has l returned after 18 months abroad, coming back to Australia by the Otranto. Andrews, she said, had taken a long while to strike his game in England, but since then he had improved greatly, and it should not be long before ho was somewhere near the top of the English ladder. He had won the singles at two big tournaments —Scarborough, which ranked about second to Wimbledon, and Buxton. Hunter had never thought that Andrews would beat him at Wimbledon, and when the match was in progress, the American was running to Tilden for advice between games. The standard of English ladies’ play was exceptionally high. There were hundreds of very line players who, if they were in Ndw Zealand, would undoubtedly be in the first flight. Miss Betty Nuthall had not produced anything approaching her true form last season. She had been trying to learn an overhead service, and this seemed to have undermined her usual confidence. Susan Noel, was probably the most promising young girl player in England. She was only 15 years of age, and could defeat many of those who were accepted for play in the championships. The standard of men’s play was, comparatively speaking, not as high as the women’s. Slow grass courts, according to experts, were keeping the game back. Miss Macfarlane, with her sister, Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, will play in the Dominion and Auckland championships. FRANKLIN COMPETITIONS (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKKEKOHE, Tuesday.
