WITHDRAWN GRANT
UNIVERSITY APPROACHES MINISTER (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Representations by the New Zealand University Council are now being made to the Minister of Education in an attempt to overcome tho difficulty created by the decision of the Minister to withdraw the Government grant to the University of New Zealand. Tho request of the council really amounts to an invitation to the Minister to appropriate the usual amount of £3,800 for the University this year. In explanation of the surplus of £4,000 shown in its balance sheet, which is the principal reason for the Minister withdrawing the annual grant, the University Council points out that the balance sheet is prepared to\ the requirements of its auditor. Of the sum mentioned £2,000 has to be remitted to London to pay the examiners, but owing to the fact that the University cannot maintain a “sundry creditors” account (the examiners never rendering any account), this £2,000, which is already owed, cannot appear in the balance sheet under that heading. The balance sheet thus does not, and canirot, in the present system of accountancy, show the University’s true position."
