TO PROVIDE WORK
MR. F. ADEANE’S PROMISE “FRIEND OF THE WORKER” Mr. Frank Adeane is going to relieve unemployment in Auckland West by getting the harbour bridge and the Morningside tunnel started. He will also do his best to have a junior high school established in Auckland West. He gave this information to the large audience that gathered to hear the Reform candidate for City West at All Saints’s Hail, Ponsonby, last evening. Mr. M. J. Eennett presided. “If you return me to Parliament,’’ said Mr. Adeane, “my first job will be to endeavour to relieve unemplovment. particularly in Auckland West.” He would advocate the commencement of the Morningside tunnel, he said, and do his best to get the harbour bridge started. Both these projects would supply Aucklanders with work.
“I would go to Parliament as a friend of the real worker.” he said. “A friend of the man who is working to establish a home and trying to improve the position of his family.” Voice: Yes. at nine bob a day. Mr. Adeane: I dont like that nine bob a day, and would rather it were 14 or 15 shillings. Continuing, he said, he would endeavour to obtain remission of income tax for the man of medium income in time of sickness, and would also try to obtain a junior high school for Auckland West. Criticising the Labour Party, he said the abolition of compulsory training plank had been toned down. Voice: Quite right. Mr. Adeane: The youth of the country should be trained to defend it. Wouldn’t you fight for your country Voice: No. Mr. Adeane: You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You’re not as good a man as I am. Before the meeting closed a man mounted the platform and, after asking a ridiculous question, launched into a speech about railways, until the audience shouted him down. A vote of confidence in the candidate was carried amid shouting and general uproar.
