“HAND THAT ROCKS CRADLE”
MRS. MAGUIRE APPEALS TO MEN Drawing inspiration from the saying that “the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the land,” Mrs. C. E. Maguire official Reform candidate for Auckland East, made an appeal last evening to the men of the electorate to support her and put “us into Parliament, where we can do some more ruling.” The Grafton Methodist Hall was packed to overflowing, and with the exception of occasional interjections, mostly of a humorous nature, the candidate was given a good hearing. Mr. Burton occupied the chair. Mrs. Maguire said the men of New Zealand were very fine, and she hoped they would not let her down. Men alone had not solved unemployment, and it was time women were given a chance.
The speaker took her hearers to European countries, where intensive cultivation was being adopted as a solution of unemployment. She said there were vast possibilities in tobacco, flower, lavender and passion fruit growing. “Passion fruit are coming into fashion, .and for that reason anyone taking it up is sure of a good living,” she said. A Voice: If everyone did there would be a slump. Mrs. Maguire: I am speaking to the unemployed. At mention of the “staggering policy of the United,” groans issued from the back of the hall. Tf £70,000,000 is said quickly,” continued the candidate, “it isn’t much and if it is spent quickly it isn’t much' either. A Voice: That’s your opinion. Mrs. Maguire then went on to deal wUh immigration, which she said couidn t be held responsible altogether for unemployment, as losses during the war had not been made up. She emphasised that immigrants must be of the right type.
The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence, an amendment to the effect that the candidate be accorded a vote of thanks only was not accepted by the chairman.
