TROOPS AT CENOTAPH

DISARMING PROPOSAL ARMISTICE DAY CEREMONY (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Sunday. A suggestion that the troops to take part in the Cenotaph ceremony on Armistice Day should be disarmed is arousing interest. It is urged that it would be a symbol of the nation’s desire for permanent peace. The “Daily Chronicle” remarks that

if soldiers are to be present unreality cannot be introduced by disarming them. “A soldier disarmed cuts a sorry figure,” says the paper. “Do without soldiers at the Cenotaph or retain them, but if they are retained they cannot be asked to be ashamed of their equipment.” The “Daily Herald” says if disarmed troops at the Cenotaph will contribute to a wider realisation of -the horror and futility of war, let them be disarmed.
