ACCIDENT WITH RIFLE

YOUNG MAN BADLY HURT BULLET SMASHES LEG When a cartridge exploded in the rifle he was cleaning last evening, Mr. Arthur E. McDonald, aged 19, of 31 Royal Terrace, Edendale, received a seriousw ound in his left leg. The bullet, coming from a .303 army service rifle at close range, shattered the bone about halfway between the knee and the ankle, and cut a main artery. A member of the St. John Amibulance, Mr. Keith Crawford, gave valuable first aid until the arrival of Dr. H. Pettit, of Mount Albert. Mr. McDonald was then taken to hospital, where a part of the leg had to be amputated. His condition this morning was fairly satisfactory.
