POWER BOARD LOAN

TAMAKI RAILWAY WILL INCREASE DEMAND £138,000 FOR PENROSE CABLE All the Auckland Electric-Power Board's available reserves have been utilised in accordance with the finan-

cial programme and no further relief from this source can be expected until after March 31. 1931. This statement was contained in a report submitted at yesterday’s meeting of the board by the general manager, Mr. R. H. Bartley. The report dealt with the board’s proposals to borrow £675,000 for the extension and improvement of plant and reticulation. The items of work covered by the loans were, for the greater part, the result of information collected during the past three years, which had been calculated and noted on plans, assuming, as had now proved to be the case, that these would all become necessary on the completion of the financial programme. The extension of the railway to Tamaki, and the resulting opening of large tracts of land would mean a further demand on power. The domestic supply throughout the district would also place a heavy demand on the board. The 22,000-volt transmission cable from Penrose, formerly thought to be necessary in 10 years’ time, would be required in about half that time. This cable, which would cost £138,000, would carry with it substations and the necessary switch-gear, together with transformers, etc. The position of these sub-stations would be with an eye to the requirements of the proposed Transport Board and the electrification of the suburban railways.
