WHALER ARRIVES

ROSS SEA FISHING DOGS FOR BYRD EXPEDITION (Special to THE SUN) DUNEDIN, Monday. The Norwegian whaler, Sir James ■ Clark Ross, arrived at Port Chalmers to-day to land a number of dogs and sledges for the Byrd Antarctic expedition, and to take on board a supply of fresh water. The ship carried a full cargo of whale oil when she left Stewart Island at the end of last season. This was discharged at New York. Her engines and hull were overhauled at Norway, and the dogs picked up at Norfolk, Virginia. On Wednesday she sails for the Stewart Island base, leaving, with five whale chasers, for the Ross Sea on November 6. The C. A. Larsen, a sister-ship, will follow about November 12. ; Captain George Hooper, nautical adviser to the Marine Department, will i sail on the Sir James Clark Ross. New whaling companies have been ’ formed in Norway to fish near the ! South Shetlands, only half the distance from Norway of the Ross Sea.
