TELEPHONES IN TENTS
FLAPS ON SLOT BOXES Patrons of the slot telephones outside the Chief Post Office were astonished this morning to find that, instead of opening the doors of the tiny cubicles, they had to brush aside a sheet-like covering in order to reach the telephones. Passers-by were mildly curious to learn the meaning of the row of snowwhite fronts to the slot boxes, and as it was a clear fine morning, many assumed that the approach of summer had created in the brains of the Post and Telegraph authorities a “speak-in-coolness” idea for the benefit of perspiring clients. The explanation is more simple. The doors of the new slot boxes were painted in a material which turned out to be particularly susceptible to the heat, and during the first few days after erection, they blistered profusely. All the doors on one side of the office have been removed, and for the privacy of the telephone users the tent-like calico flaps have been erected. When this side has been completed, the repainting of the remaining doors will be undertaken, and the whole job will bo completed by the beginning of next week.
