“NOT SUBJECT TO RECALL”
LABOUR MAN DENIES STATEMENT (Special to THE SUN) THAMES, Monday. The Reform v. Labour fight in Thames has been enlivened by challenges between Mr. A. M. Samuel, the sitting Reform member, and Mr. J. S. Montgomerie, Labour. Mr. Samuel stated that Labour members were subject to recall, and had to hand in a signed resignation for use in case they did not vote with their party. Mr. Montgomerie challenged the truth of this, and offered to retire if it could be proved. In reply, Mr. Samuel said the Labour Pa.rty issued a manifesto of 14 clauses, the first of which was “the enactment of the initiative, the referendum and the recall.” The candidates were pledged to this. If Mr. Montgomerie was not pledged he must repudiate these planks. Mr. Samuel has had good meetings. He assured them that he had done his best for Thames, and no one could have done more.
Referring to the Uniteds, he said it was a cruel thing to put the burden on the frail shoulders of Sir Joseph Ward, the last and bravest of the old Liberals. They hoped Sir Joseph would recover from his illness in time to carry on the fight.
