Labour’s Platform
MR. HOLLAND AT WAIROA A FIGHTING SPEECH Press Association WAIROA, To-day. Mr. H. E. Holland. Leader of the Opposition, last ev.ening: addressed one of the largest political meetings ever held at Wairoa, receiving a most enthusiastic reception. His speech was a vigorous fighting one, and was frequently punctuated with applause. He followed closely on the lines of his New Plymouth address, giving a clear indication of the Labour Party’s views, and castigating the Reform Government on its sins of commission and omission. He stressed Labour’s land policy, condemned high interest rates, and alleged that the Government was in the hands of the associated banks and financial institutions, which dictated .its financial policy. He also strongly criticised tax reductions benefitting wealthy landowners, and asserted that land speculation and aggregation was encouraged by the Government, which had wrecked the dairy co-operative marketing scheme. Mr. Holland advocated the prosecuting of remunerative public works and the adoption of standard wages for the relief of unemployment. He ridiculed the system of accounting, and roundly condemned as iniquitous Orders-in-Council and playing with the Licensing Bill.
He received a unanimous vote of thanks.
