RIFLE SHOOTING
Saturday saw the local clubs endeavouring to show their worth as service shots, but owing to the number of short-range targets allotted to them by the defence- authorities being inadequate, only half the scheduled practices could be completed. This, however, was not entirely the fault of the Defence Office, as only one of the clubs, the City and Suburbs, applied at the beginning of the season for short-range accommodation, and it is felt that owing to the congested conditions the club was quite generously treated. This club offered to share its targets with such, of the Akarana members who might care to compete, and it was a gratifying surprise that the majority of the members rolled up, only a comparative few preferring to practise bulls-eye shooting on the longer range. Although only two practices were completed—plates and running man at 200yds—some very good performances were registered by members of each club. It would be hard to single out any one in particular as being outstanding over the others, though the performances of H. W. Verrall and L. Craddock, of City and Suburbs, and of T. Elliott and C. Ashley, of Akarana, were very meritorious. These are all young shots and with the exception of Verrall and Elliott have not had much experience in this class of shooting. It is expected that the City and Suburbs Club will enter two teams in the Army Group meeting on November 24, and with a little practice both should make a good showing.
