ROMANCE OF SUCCESS
MR. ALISON HONOURED MEMORIAL CLOCK UNVEILEE In the presence of a large crowd of Devonport citizens, the clock commemorating the pioneering work done for North Shore by the Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C., was unveiled on Saturday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, in performing the ceremony, said Mr. Alison’s career was a record of sustained endeavour in the transformation of the hamlet which, *SO years ago, clustered at the foot of Flagstaff Hill. Mr. Alison’s career was the romance of ultimate success, realised achievement, and consecrated citizenship. Describing Mr. Alison as Devonport’s grand old man, Mr. A. Harris, M.P., said the whole of North owed a debt to Mr. Alison, whose record was an incentive to all. He had earned the esteem and affection of all citizens with whom he had been associated. Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, the borough in which Mr. Alison was first mayor, said he had pleasure in honouring Mr. Alison, for he was as much a Takapuna man as a citizen of Devonport. In acknowledging the addresses, Mr. Alison said he had been continuously in public life for 51 years, and at times had held five or six public offices together. People had often asked why he did not take things easy, but he believed in leading the strenuous life. The clock was set going at three o’clock, the Mayor stripping off the flag, and the Devonport United Band playing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
