To Wrest from Earth Her Last Big Secret
WILKINS SmS OUT BOUND FOR ANTARCTIC (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 1.15 p.m. LONDON. Friday. The Australian airman, Sir Hubert Wilkins, has sent a cable message from Montevideo, dated October 24. stating that the sturdy whaler Hektoria has weighed anchor on the second stage of the journey to the remote ice-bound Antarctic. All members of the expedition were cheerful, ho said, and sent farewell messages. Lieutenant Carl Eielson, Grossan, Porter, and he were in the highest spirits, and were anticipating complete success. The Norwegians manning the Hektoria were a splendid lot, strong, willing, and brave, and had greatly assisted in the careful stowing of the airplanes, stores, and baggage. This was essential, because their success and their lives depended on the machines. Everyone at Montevideo had been most kind. By starting that day it would mean that the expedition would reach the Antarctic, the land of blizzards. immense ice barriers, and frozen mountains, by the middle of November. “We are happy to be on the way to the fringe of that domain/* the message states, “and are confident w«can wrest from Mother Earth what is probably her last big secret.’
