First Synod Since Reformation
London Clergy Discuss Prayer Book
(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 1.15 p.m. LONDON, Wednesday. ST. iIARTINS-IN-THE-FIELDS is the meeting place of 1,400 clergymen of the London Diocese who have been called together at the instance of the Bishop of London, this being the first synod of the diocese since the Reformation
The Bishop, in an address lasting three-quarters of an hour, explained that he wanted the clergy’s guidance in connection with the action of the bishops following on Parliament’s rejection of the Prayer Boob. They were not assembled as law-breakers, but in the interests of peace. The Rev. G. Milnes, vicar of St. Chad’s, Ilaggerstou, stood up and declared that the svnod was illegal, as it was implying the right of the bishops to override the House of Commons’s decision. Having protested, Mr. Milnes withdrew.
