“NAPOLEON RETREATS”
UNITED LOAN PROPOSALS MR. J. A. LEE IN FORM The Labour man in Auckland East. Mr. J. A. Lee, was in good form last evening when, in an address at the Parnell Library, he dealt severely with the policy of the United Party. Tho only promise of the new party, Mr. Lee said, was one of continued borrowing, and was in keeping with the reputation of its leader, Sir Joseph Ward, as a financial Napoleon, though on this occasion Napoleon was engaged in his retreat from Moscow. Many of the party candidates were frankly afraid of their leader’s proposals. Sir Joseph, in fact, nad done nothing since his opening speech but explain away his millions. A certain amount of borrowing was necessary, but he favoured borrowing as far us possible inside the country. The Post Oilice Savings Bank could be converted into a State bank almost overnight, with a profit to the co-untry. Borrowing during the past few years had been excessive, and had been followed bv excessive taxation. Nothing better was offered by Sir Joseph Ward, who only promised a continuation of excessive borrowing. Air Lee was thanked for his address’. and confidence expressed in his candidature.
