STOCK MARKETS FIRM

N.Z. MOVEMENTS KEEN DEMAND FOR BEEF The demand for ail classes of stock throughout the Dominion continues well maintained, and with supplies at the moment not registering any noticeable increase, prices are steady around late levels. The beef market is particularly firm. -At "Westfield yesterday well-finished beef met with a very keen demand, the market holding firm at late rates. The ox beef offering comprised a big percentage of really well-finished handy-weight steers, which met with keen competition at from about £ls 5s to £l9 2s 6d for the heavier-boned sorts. A few heavier but older and no so attractive bullocks made slightly better money Best quality young ox beef made to 455. The cow and Tieifer beef offering showed a slight improvement on that seen at reecnt sales, but there was still room for considerable improvement. Cull dairy sorts were well in evidence. The few well-finished young cattle forward in this section met with keen competition, making, in some instances, slightly more than the auctioneer’s top quotations at 40s. A smaller yarding of calves came forward to meet with a slightly easier demand. Good calves sold readily, but there was a decided decline in the market for inferior sorts when compared with last week’s opening rates. Fewer Woolly Sheep The feature of a very heavy offering of sheep was the big percentage of shorn sheep. Within another fortnight or so it seems that woollies will be off the market. The average quality of the yarding was good, several lines of specially well-finished sheep coming forward. One of the heaviest lines of ewes seen this season was sold on account of a local vendor and made 435. The sheep were specially big-boned and carried a great weight of wool. Smaller choice quality heavy prime ewes, also carrying a great weight of wool, on account of G. Findlay, Miranda, made 41s 3d. There were no specially heavy lines of woolly wethers. A line of 210 big-framed shorn wethers on account of J. E. Richardson, Te Akau, made to 375, topping the market for its class. The sheep market generally had an easier tone, although prices for special lots of woollies were equal to last week’s. Several lots of shorn sheep sold at up to Is a head below last week’s rates. Lambs sold freely at late rates. Top price of 36s was secured for a specially prime lamb on account A. Sintoii, Riverhead. Another large yarding of pigs met with a steady demand. Dull Market at Johnsonville Sheep met with a dull demand in the Johnsonville saleyards yesterday, and prices showed a decline on late rates. The cattle offered were of good quality, but the demand was slack. Lambs sold freely. Prices ranged as follow:—Bullocks, £l7 to £l9 15s; cows, £lO 7s 6d to £ll ss; shorn wethers, 30s 9d to 31s 6d; ewes (shorn), 26s 6d to 30s 6d; ewes (woolly), 3Ss 9d to 39s 9d; spring lambs, 27s to 325. Stortford Lodge Market There was a representative attendance of buyers at the usual weekly sale in the Stortford Lodge yards yesterday, when a heavy yarding of cattle and a medium yarding of sheep came forward. Prices for all classes of cattle were good; the market for fat sheep held at last week’s rates; store sheep met a better market than was anticipated. Prices ranged as follow:—Fat bullocks, £l3 to £l6 12s Id; fat cows, £9 to £l2; fat heifers, £9 to £l3; forward bullocks, £ll to £l3 12s; 3 to 4-year bullocks, £9 10s to £ll 10s; yearling steers, £5 10s to £6 ss; fat ewes, shorn, 20s to 255; woolly, 28s to 325; shorn 2-tooth wethers, 24s to 26s 6d; shorn 4-tooth wethers, 27s 6d; wether hoggets, 30s to 32s 9d. Heavier Entries at Addington Increased entries were recorded in most sections at Addington yesterday. An entry of 307 spring lambs, compared witn 240 last week, sold freely on a market Is to Is 6d a head lower. Although a heavier yarding of fat cattle came forward, the supplv was not equal to the demand, and prices registered an advance of from £1 to £2 a head. Extra prime handyweight steer and heifer beef sold up to 55s a hundred lb; average prime steer beef to 50s; prime cow and heifer beef to 495. Prices for fat sheep were on a par with those ruling last week. Extra prime heavy-weight bullocks made to £23 2s 6d; extra prime heifers, to £lB 17s 6d; extra prime woolly wethers, to 54s 6d; prime shorn wethers, to 40s 4d; extra prime ewes, to ols 4d, snorn ewes to 40s lOd.
