SHORT CUT TO WEALTH
COMPANY PROMOTERS IN COURT VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED Press Association DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The sequel to what was described by counsel as “a mad get-rich-quick scheme,” was enacted in the Police Court to-day before Air. J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., when two men named Herbert Rollinson and Harry Vincent appeared on several charges, of having obtained money by means of valueless cheques. Chief-Detective Cameron, who conducted the prosecution, stated that the accused had travelled about the country attempting to form companies in connection with the petrol supply business, and whenever their funds had run low they issued valueless cheques to meet their liabilities. In all 19 cheques had been issued, money to the value of £l5O having been obtained thereby. Both men came of good families, Rollinson’s people being highly respectable residents of the Timaru district. Counsel for the accused said that a mad get-rich-quick scheme had been their downfall, and they had been more foolish than criminal. Probation was asked for. The magistrate ordered the accused to be detained in custody until Saturday in order that a report might be received from the Probation Officer.
