ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK
S.P.C.A. OBSERVANCE EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME From to-day until next Thursday Animal Welfare Week is being recognised throughout New Zealand. The Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is making special arrangements to ensure the success of the observance. The co-operation of IYA has been sought. A short address on animal welfare will probably be given during children’s hour. Slides indicating the work of the society have been supplied to several picture theatres. This year the society has already sent 65 parcels of literature to schools throughout the province. It is estimated that about 31,000 pamphlets have been distributed. Teachers have been
asked to speak to their classes on the duty of kindness to animals. Last year’s Animal Welfare Week was the most successful held in New Zealand since the inception of the event five years ago. Preparations for the 1928 observance have been more extensive. To-morrow will be "humane day” in schools, and October 28 will be “animal Sunday.” Ministers and Sunday school teachers have been asked to give special addresses. The society expects to start a hospital for animals shortly at New Lynn. It will be conducted by a veterinary surgeon. A dog's home will be run in conjunction with the hospital and people when going away will be able to leave animals at the home. On Saturday afternoon. Mrs. P. H. Smith is holding a juvenile gymkhana at the East Tamaki sports grounds. Most of the 3 7 events will be pony competitions, and the proceeds will be for the society. After the end of the welfare week, the society will continue to centre its activities in the schools.
