CITRUS FRUIT IN N.Z.

all-dominion council PROPOSED MOVE BY AUCKLANDERS This morning a special meeting of the Auckland Citrus Growers’ Association agreed to the formation of an all - New Zealand controlling body. The organisation is to be called the New Zealand Citrus Growers’ Council, Ltd., and the promoters explained to the 40 members present that the idea behind formation was primarily the fostering of the citrus and subtropical fruits industry throughout the Dominion. The new body will have the power to speak for the industry on such questions as tariff, standardisation, and bud selection. Mr. S. W. Harris, president of the ; Auckland Association, was chairman. He said that the industry was making fair progress, and concessions had been obtained from the Government. There was a feeling that a larger organisation would mean greater progress. Mr. H. S. Izard, the secretary, said that there had .been slight and unnecessary friction between the Auckland ard the Tauranga associations in the past. It was now realised that the fight against duty should be taken up by one body. In moving that a Dominion council should be formed, he said that the proposed body would speak on duty, legislation, and organisation concerning the industry. Mr. G. Green was confident that six associations would soon be affiliated with the council. There were areas in Hawke’s Bc.y, the South Island, and the south-west portion of the North Island where citrus fruits could be grown. Mr. Green, after the adoption of the formation proposal, read his draft of the rules for discussion by the meeting. The draft provided for the taking of shares by members for the purpose of registration under the Indus- j trial and Provident Societies Act. Provision was also made for the taking of steps to secure affiliation with i the Fruitgrowers’ Federation. Questions affecting the citrus fruit industry were discussed by those at the meeting. Later, short addresses were given on fruit culture and planting.
