HURDLES TO RIPON ABBEY
(Special to THE SLX J TE RAPA, To-day. . THE Waikato Racing Club's spring carnival reached * finality to-day, when there was a good attendance at Te Rapa. The weather was showery and the track holding. Results:—
MATANGI HURDLES Of £100; 1 % miles e—RIPON ABBEY (R. Hannon), b y, by Quin Abbey—Bell Crispin, 6vrs, 9.5, R. E. Thompson l 3—MASTER ROLEY (G. Gillett), br g. by Cynic—Miss Roseland, 4yrs, 9.0, K. Mason 2 2 FARNDON (R. J. McMiken), br g, by California—Ballistitc, aged, 9.10, R. Syme 3 Also started.—l Siaosi, 11.7; 4 Uralla, 10.11; 5 Gala Day, 10.1; 7 Gold Rep, 9.7; S Mangaiti. 9.0. Winner trained by owner, Cambridge. Won by six lengths, a head between second and third. Time, 3.23 2-5. Ripon Abbey Romps Home Gala. Day was the early pilot and led past the stand from Ripon Abbey, Siaosi, Master Roley, Mangaiti and Farndon. Before turning out of the straight Ripon Abbey was in front, and going along the back was four lengths clear of Gala Day, Master Roley, Farjidon and Siaosi. the latter falling at the six-furlong post. Ripon Abbey entered the straight with a good lead from Master Roley, Gala Day and Farndon. •and was never troubled to win by half a dozen lengths from Master Roley, who just got the verdict for second money by a head from Farndon, after a hard tussle. Gala Day was fourth and then came Mangaiti, Uralla and Gold Rep. E. C. Rae, the Ellerslie horseman, received a nasty shaking when his mount, Siaosi, who was favourite, fell in the Matangi Hurdles. Winner trained by owner, Huntly. Won by three lengths, a nose between second and third. Time, 1.33. Little Fancied Hakanoa Wins When the field had settled down, Taneriri and Volomond were showing out from Oscar, Te Ngeru, Black Maire and Nellie Secundus, but as they crossed the top Volomond went to th«> lead, followed by Oscar, Unoco, Te Ngeru, Taneriri and Black Maire. Approaching the straight, the favourite lost his position, and Unoco was just behind the leader as they turned for home, with Taneriri, Hakanoa, who had come through well, Te Ngeru and Valroe all in the picture. In the final dash, Hakanoa went right away to win by three lengths, and in a determined finish between Te Ngeru and Valroe for second berth, tho former prevailed by a nose. Unoco was fourth, and then came Oscar, Taneriri and Voicmond. The winner paid a good double-figure dividend. RUAKURA HANDICAP Of £150; 5 furlongs (for two-year-olds). I—FLYING PRINCE (E. H. Gill 3 Also started: 4 Valstreet, 7.7; 2 Gigolo, 7.7: 6 Spa, 7.7; 8 Trig, 7.7; 5 Dalston, 7.5. Winner trained by F. Loomb, Te Awamutu. Won by a neck, similar distance between second and third. Time, 1.7 3-5. A Stirring Finish Awamutu began best and led across the top from Flying Prince, Fraser and Gigolo. The favourite had worked his way to the front when the home stretch was reached, being followed into the straight by Awamutu. Fraser, Dalston and Gigolo. In a great finish Flying Prince gained the decision by a neck from his stable mate, with Fraser a similar distance away third. Dalston was fourth, followed by Spa, Gigolo, and Trig. Valstreet was fractious at the barrier, and eventually, was badly left, to finish last. HAMILTON HANDICAP Of £450; 1J miles 2 VALKON (P. G. Harper), br g, by Valkyrian—Glacier, syrs, S.S, C. Winner trained by J. IT. Wallace, Te Aroha. Won by two lengths, third horse same distance away./ Time, 2.14 2-5. Valkon Lands at Last Tidal and Star Comet were slow to move, and Micrometer, beginning smartest, led out of the straight from Valkon, Catkin, Papatu and King Smock. Micrometer was sailing along the back in the lead, with Valkon, King Smock, Catkin, Papatu, Mint Leaf and Transformer following in that order. The three leaders were first into the straight with Te Kara and Catkin also prominent. Inside the distance Micrometer cried enough, leaving Valkon in front and stalling off a challenge by the favourite, be won by two lengths. Mint Leaf was a similar distance back third and the next to cross the line were Pale Star. King Smock, Te Kara. Queen Arch. Papatu, Micrometer and Transformer. TROTTING REHANDICAPS METROPOLITAN FIXTURE For the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s carnival next month, the handicapper, Mr. George Paul, has declared penalties on King Pointer and The Abbey, recent winners. In the Victoria Handicap, Pointer has been rchandicapped to 60 yards, while he will start off 24 yards in the St. Albans Handicap. The Abbey, for his win in the Whangarei Cup, is penalised 12 yards in the Riccarton Handicap, in which he was originally oil the limit. Hoyiake Scratched Hoy lake, a recent winner in Canterbury, and one of the fancies for the New Zealand Cup, has been scratched for the Akaroa Handicap at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday. Goshawk Penalised The handicapper for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring carnival, Mr. J. E. Henrys, announces that in consequence of his dual victory at Wellington, Goshawk has been rehandicapped at 5.6 for the Stewards’ Handicap.
