THE BOXING RING

Notes From Far and Near

By

“LEFT COUNTER”

Jim Broadfoot is matched to fight Eddie Parker at Palmerston North toward the end of the month. The Auckland bantam-weight, Frank Taylor, has been without a fight for some time, but on November 7 he will face the Australian Teddy Green over 15 rounds, Napier. Harry Wliybrow, who has fought in many countries and who possesses a credential from the secretary of the National Sporting Club, has been training with Tommy Fairhall and is on the lookout for matches. Walker Ambitious Mickey Walker is not content with meeting men in the middle-weight division, of which he is world’s champion, but wants to meet light-heavies and heavies. Tie recently knocked out Armand Emanuel, the Jewish contender for the heavy-weight .title, in seven rounds. Sharkey Injuries a Knee While training for a bout Jack Sharkey injured his left knee and he will be unable to fight before the end of November. The ex-sailor has his knee in plaster and is hobbling about on crutches. The injury will also hurt him in the pocket as he has been forced to cancel three matches. Champion of the World? When Johnny Hill, the English flyweight, met and defeated Newsboy Brown in England, he was acclaimed fly-weight champion of the world. However, although Brown is recognised in some States of America as the champion, others hold that Corporal Izzy Swartz is the title holder. In these circumstances it is hardly likely that the Americans will allow Hill’s claim to the championship. Harms For Auckland? Jack Warner, who has been managing Tommy Mclnnes in Auckland, is endeavouring to get Billy Harms, the South African mid<lleweight, to come across from Australia. If Harms decides to make the journey he will be tried out by the Northern Boxing Association officials and should he prove to be “the goods” he will be given a match in this city. Van Reeden’s Offence The American bantam-weight, Charlie Van Reeden, was a through passenger by the Niagara from Sydney. Van Reeden’s contract in Australia was terminated as a result of his fight with Kid Socks, which the American agreed to lose in the fifth round. Questioned regarding the incident yesterday Van Reeden declined to make a statement. He expected that he would be suspended from fighting when he arrived in the States, but he hoped that he would be allowed to continue boxing. Other passengers were Mike Yokel and Bob Myers, the wrestling stars, who are returning to America after a successful season in Australia.

. Ted Morgan has arrived back in New Zealand but as his hand is not yet sound his future programme ha-s not yet been decided. Johnny Lcckie again carried too many guns for Billy Melton, the fight at Greymouth on Saturday ending in the seventh round when Melton’s seconds skied the tower. Second Joe Gans Hailed as a second Joe Gans, a San Francisco negro named Jack Thompson is creating a tremendous impression in the land of the dollar. His style is said to be strikingly like that of Gans. a fine boxer with a terrific punch in both hands. Broadfoot and Pocock Jim Broadfoot had his first fight for some months when he met Clarrie Pocock at Christchurch on Saturday when the decision was a draw. The pair had met once previously when they fought a. great 10-round bout in Auckland, the decision going to Broadfoot after a thrilling and even bout. Match Cancelled The abandonment of the FairhallPurdy contest through the Australian contracting muscular rheumatism, will prove a big disappointment to Wellingtonians. The contest promised to be one of the best staged in New Zealand but Fairhall’s inability to appear left nothing to be done but the cancellation of the match. However the pair will probably meet when Fairhall has recovered. Successors to Tunney A number of boxers think that they are entitled to the throne vacated by Gene Tunney and among them are Johnny Risko and Young Stribling, who both lodged applications with the New York Commission to be recognised as champion, but their claims were dismissed. Risko accompanied his application with a cheque for 2,500 dollars and signified his willingness to meet any boxer who disputed his claim, which he based on decisions over Delaney, Uzcudun, Sharkey, Godfrey and Scott. Stribling quoted victories over Risko and Cook. * * * Mclnnes May Return A Southern writer states that it is the intention of Tommy Mclnnes to go to America but this statement is incorrect. Conversing with me last week Mclnnes stated that he was not going to America yet. He was going to Sydney where he is to be married and he may engage in a contest or two there. If the Northern Boxing Association again desires his services he will return to New Zealand and will be open to meet any boxer in the country. Afterwards he will return to Scotland. Mclnnes said that he only came to Australia for experience and that his trainer in the home country wanted him to return. It is to be hoped that Mclnnes will be brought back to New Zealand as Aucklanders want to see him opposed to Lachie McDonald a second time.
