NOW MAKING A LOSS ONLY UNPROFITABLE LINES “Our only failure has been with the railways which were created by Ward and Seddon. The North Island lines are paying, but those in the South Island are not. The lines in the South Island on which a loss is being made are those which were policy railways constructed by Seddon.” Air. V. H. Potter, Reform candidate fox* Eden, spoke in the Epsom Library Hall last evening to a packed audience. The candidate attacked both United and Labour Parties. He declared, that Sir Joseph Ward had as much chance of beating Mr. Coates as Tommy Burns would have of getting into fighting trim and beating Tom Heeney. Both politician and boxei*, were “has-beens.” Labour’s pbEcy. he said, was one of confiscation I Socialism. The Public Del- to-day stood at £251.000,000, but Sir Joseph Ward and the United Party wished to add another £70,000,000. Of the total debt £71,000,000 had been incurred during; the war years by the Coalition Government, of which Sir Joseph Ward waa Alinister of Finance. Air. Potter quoted figures to show that New Zealand, both in income and indirect taxation, was one of the lowest taxed countries in the world. A man in New Zealand with an income of £I,OOO was taxed £43, in New South Wales £45, in Queensland £49, in South Australia £66, and in Great Britain £77. A man making £IO,OOO a year had £2,300 taken away, and the “big man” was taxed up to his neckThree cheers were given for the candidate.
