MR. STERLING’S SALARY
“£IO,OOO WOULD BE ECONOMICAL MR. V. H. POTTER’S OPINION No business concern m Great Britain, with a capital of £60,000,000, would dare to pay its manager only £3,500 a year—the salary paid to the general manager of the New Zealand Railways. i This statement was made by the Reform candidate for Eden, Mr. V. H. Potter, last evening. He said that Air. IL H. Sterling, the railways manager, had saved the department £20,000 in the last five months, and if h© were paid £IO,OOO it would be an economical salary to pay him; he would have made more than he cost. The superannuation arrangement with Mr. Sterling was well worth while, declared the speaker. When Air. Sterling was asked to return to the department he had said his price was £ 5,000 a year if he was not given superannuation from the time he originally joined the service.
