GAVE NO PLEDGE
MR. STALLWOWRTHY EMPHATIC ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING “I am no blind follower. I have given no secret pledge to any man/’ asserted Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, United candidate for Eden, in an address to 700 electors at Dominion Road last evening. The candidate was emphatic that there was a riot of feeling for a change in Government. There were few interjections, and the enthusiasm of the crowd had its peak when some of the front-benchers began to sing ‘‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” after Mr. Stallworthy’s address. One interjection at the start put the crowd in an anticipatory mood. The chairman was making his opening remarks. He said: “I introduce Air. Stall worthy to you as ” A Voice: A twister. Air. Stallworthy was not interrupted, and was consistently applauded. He reviewed a number of local needs. One was the turning of Alotuihi Island into a park, an danother the building of a bridge across Waitemata Harbour. As to playing spaces, he suggested a scheme by which local authorities could add to the areas of school grounds \to meet the needs of the people. He dealt lengthily with the prison system and tho importance of attempting to regenerate social offendei*s. His idea for reform was the establishment of farm colonies on islands. Air. Stallworthy advocated a change in tho Post Office Savings Bank system. Interest would be paid oh daily ba lances. Ho was emphatic that he had given no pledge to any man. He would be loyal to the leader of the United Party, but would not be a blind follower.
