STOLE FROM FRIEND
WOMAN GIVEN CHANCE KNEW HOUSE WAS EMPTY A young married woman who stole money from a friend’s house was given a chance by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. She was originally charged with breaking and entering in addition to the theft, but, on the recommendation of Chief-Detective Hammond, the charge was amended to one of the theft of £2 15s 6d, which was admitted by Mr. Allan Moody, who appeared for accused. Mr. Hammond told the court that the woman was married with one child her husband being in a good position. She was a friend of complainant, who, on the day of the offence, was visiting her mother at an apartment house where accused also lived. Hearing: that complainant was going to town in the afternoon, the young woman went round to her house and, entering through a window, stole the money. The facts were admitted by counsel, who urged that his client had succumbed to a sudden impulse. She had since made restitution. In accordance with a suggestion made by the female probation officer, Major Annie Gordon, the case was adjourned for six months, accused to be in the officer’s care during that time. Her name was suppressed in the meantime.
