Buying continues with unabated fervour, and fabulous prices are being paid. It is estimated that 50,000 officeseekers are living in Nanking's hotels. Landlords are charging doirble and treble rents. The Nationalist capital has become a profiteer’s paradise. The majority of buyers are Shanghai merchants. Corporations are being organ ised to build cinenjas, restaurants, and hotels. The minimum price asked for the smallest lot is 10,000 dollars. The same property was leased for 20 dollars a year before the boom, which suggests that people believe that a stable Government has finally been established. Foreigners, however, are sceptical.
