“Black Hand Society”
THREATENING LETTER SENT TO MOTORIST ROAD-HOG WARNED Press Association. MARTON, To-day. “We never fail. If you do not silence your motor-bike when in the vicinity of Wellington Hospital dire consequences will befall you. "Signed: High Master, Black Hand Society." ( This warning was contained in a letter found in the possession of Geoffrey Norman Butcher, a motor mechanic, of Wellington, charged yesterday with being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car and with failing to have a silencer attached to the exhaust. Evidence was given that Butcher raced his car on the highways near Marton on Sunday, the machine making a tremendous roar. Residents thought that an airplane was in the vicinity. , . Butcher admitted to several previous convictions for speeding. He said the letter referred to had been received some time ago, and that several similar ones had been sent to motorists in Wellington. Butcher was fined £lO and his licence was cancelled on the major charge, and a fine of £5 was imposed for failing to have a silencer attached to his car exhaust.
