AUSTRALIA'S FEAST
CAN N.Z. SHARE IT? HELEN WILLS’S VISIT Can Helen Wills, singles champion, be persuaded to visit New Zealand? Australia is confident that the world's first lady will visit that country in November, and play in the Victorian and Australian championships. Xorman Brookes did the arranging for the visit, and he also suggested that Miss Elizabeth Ryan, who will be in Burma early in the summer, might visit Australia.. Perhaps the New Zealand LT.A. has already taken action and invited them to this country, where, even if the tennis is not up to their standard, they
might enjoy the tourist attractions. It is easy to prophesy record gates for such a visit. Australia is also to have a visit from a team of South African women. The programme suggested is as follows: V. Western Australia, at Perth, November 9 and 10; v. South Australia, at Adelaide, November 16 and 17; v. Victoria, at Melbourne, November 23 and 24; Victorian championships beginning November 30; v. Queensland, at Brisbane, December 14 and 15* v New South Wales, at Sydney, December 21 and 22, test match. Commenting on a victory of Nigel Sharpe over ’Bunny” Austin, an English critic says; “An illustration of the relative softness of Sharpe's game was afforded when he met "Buster” Andrews, the New Zealand stalwart now at Cambridge. Andrews did not win by a wide margin, he was never dominating the court, but he has the service power and break, and the volleying acumen which revealed the limitations of our home-bred and hometournament competitors. Andrews has arrived to explain why, for the past two years, no Englishman has been in the ‘last eight’ at Wimbledon.” * * * One day recently, in the marquee at Forest Hills, a prominent official said to me: “It is too bad about poor Bill, isn’t it?” My mind reacted quickly, and I replied : “No, I wouldn't put it that way. In my opinion it is too bad for the poor Executive Cofnmittee.” That is really the way it seems to me.—S. T. Merrihew, editor, "American i Lawn Tennis.”
