CRASHED!
Black Day for Favourite Backers GOSHAWK BEATS MASK (Special to THE SUy>) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Wellington spring races were opened to-day in fine hut windy weather. The course was in excellent condition. Favourites received a sound thrashing, among the defeated being Gold Tinge and Commendation. The totalisator handled £47.313 J, against £45,292. First Hurdles In the First Hurdles Handicap Polyphemus was sent out a better favourite than Radiate, with Vexatious next in demand. The field had only reached the first hurdle when Beaumont blundered and dropped his rider. Pantler took up the running and led through the straight from Sneezer, Carthinia, Askari and Pantagruel, with Radiate in the middle of the field. Radiate improved his position by getting a nice run through on the rails. Pantagruel. however, was m charge at the last hurdle, and Radiate had to be hard ridden to win by a neck. Pantagruel, who was at a good price, beat Askari for second by five lengths, and Vexatious was close up fourth, followed by Carinthia and Hymgreat. Radiate finished in great style and thoroughly earned his victory, while Pantagruel’s form suggests early success. Carinthia went a fair race and so did Vexatious, but the distance beat Polyphemus, who might do better over a shorter course. Taita Handicap The big money in the Taita Handicap was for the Woodville-trained Clever, while Equitant and Head Serang also commanded considerable support. The start was somewhat ragged. Push, Sapient and Admiral Drake were among the first to show out, but it was a fairly even race till nearing home, when Admiral Drake was clear. Then Head Serang came through and challenged, but Admiral Drake won by half a length from Head Serang, who beat Pass Book by nearly a length for second, with Clever fourth, Sapient fifth, and then Insurgent and Push. Tho unlucky runner was Head Serang, who failed to jump out well and lost several lengths at the start. Wainui Handicap Battle Colours touched a very short price in the Wainui Handicap, and anything else was at a good figure. Vigilancfe was quickest to move, and she made the early running from Chelone, who was under a pull, Royal Game and Partaga. The order was about the same crossing the top, half a mile from home, when Pangolin was moving up and King Midas also was going well. At this stage, too, Battle Colours had considerably improved his position, but was running on the outside of the field. Partaga took charge in the straight and looked like coming on, but King Midas finished with a great rattle and got up to win very nicely by a length, while Partaga finished three and a-half lengths in front of Vigilance. Solrose was a fair fourth, followed by Kilmiss, Pangolin and Cashier. Battle Colours was going very nicely just before turning for home, but he exhibited no dash at all in the straight. Partaga looked well and ran a great race, but at the weights King Midas beat him decisively. Solrose is one that might improve soon. Rimutaka Handicap Quite a number of horses -were well backed in the Rimutaka Handicap, among them being Teri, Mendip and Courageous. Rumeses got to the front early in the race and led to the straight from Kalia, with King’s Jest, First Ruler and Rotowhero handy, and Mendip in a“fair position after having been, left several lengths. Rameses
ran on best and -won by half a length from Rotowhero, who was a length and a-half clear of King’s Jest, the next being Tanagra and Mendip. Mendip was very unlucky. He was finishing on again at the end, and will win when he leaves the barrier with the field. Courageous drew the rails, and being a slow' beginner, was sent back to last after going a furlong. Tanagra was confidently backed, and .had every chance. King’s Guest ran a good race Wellington Handicap Pink Note was a few pounds better favourite than Goshawk in the Wellington Handicap, and all the competitors except Nukumai were well supported. Pink Note began well and led the field out of the straight, Goshawk, Nukumai and Rapier following, while Mask and Black Mint were at the tail of the field. Along the back Pink Note was always going nicely in front. Goshawk kept in behind him, and Rapier and Nukumai both held their positions. Blimp made a fast run through on the top turn, where Mask also made up a lot of ground. Pink Note led into the straight, but half-way along the running Goshawk came to the front and went on to win easily by a length and a-half from Mask, -with Pink Note two lengths away third and Beacon Light fourth. These were followed home by Rapier and Shining Armour, with Nukumai last. Goshawk won impressively, and is not done with yet. Rapier looked well, though big, and ran very promisingly. Beacon Light also should do well if he keeps sound. Pink Note failed to stay, and Blimp was not quite good enough. Mask was very unlucky, getting out too late in the race. Wellesley Stakes The Wellesley witnessed the defeat of a hot favourite in the Randwick winner. Gold Tinge. Speed Light began well, and with Francolin led on to the course proper from First Money, with Gold- Tinge in the middle of the field. Gold Tinge could make no impression on the leaders in the straight, and Speed Light won very nicely from Francolin, with Royal Flyer a fair third. Gold Tinge was fourth and First Money fifth. Speed Light won on her merits and no excuse can be offered for the defeat
of the favourite. First Money would have been closer had he managed the home turn better. Shorts Handicap Another hot favourite went down in j the Shorts Handicap, Commehdation be- ! ing beaten into fourth place. Helotis j and Consent were the leaders on to the j course proper from Benzora and White | Fang, with The Hawk and Commenda- ! tion fairly well placed and Arrow Lad I afto handy. , Helotis ran very wide on | the home turn, and Consent came j through on the rails, and was well clear J a furlong from home. Helotis could not run on, and Arrow Lad challenged, but Consent beat him home by two lengths and a-half. The Hawk, who was third, was another length away, and Commendation was fourth. Booster was well up behind the placed horses. Consent will now be regarded as a Stewards’ Handicap chance. Commendation was fairly beaten, and The Hawk, with the race into him, may win soon. \ AVhite Fang failed to run on. October Handicap One more reverse met bettors in the October Handicap, the concluding event of the day. Veronese went to the front at the rise of the barrier, and was never headed. He led on to the course proper from Royal Duke, but the latter could not run on and Veronese won easily by three lengths from Arrow Boy, who finished well. Tcheka was a fair third, and Callanmore fourth, ahead of Royal Duke and Bourse. Following are the results: — First Hurdles Handicap, of £350, 31 j miles.—2 Radiate, 9.9, J.
