How Corinax Won the Waikato Cup
TOUGH DUEL WITH VALKON NANCY LEE A COMFORTABLE WINNER A cold wind was the only drawback uO the fine day’s sport provided at Te Rapa on Saturday by the Waikato Racing Club, on the occasion of the spring meeting. The attendance was large, and splendid racing was witnessed, fields being good throughout. The contest for the Waikato Cup, reduced on this occasion to a mile and a-quarter. furnished a struggle in keeping ’ with the occasion, the Ellerslie-owned and trained Corinax springing a mild surprise by defeating Valkon in a tight finish, a performance all the more meritorious by reason of the fact that the winner is still susceptible to improvement. Love Call proved a smart two-year-old in capturing the juvenile event, although the opposition was by no means strong. Nancy Lee, a good favourite for the Cambridge Handicap, the principal sprint, won comfortably from two out - siders in Ballymoy 11. and Pegaway, and Schorr scored a convincing win in the Claudelands Higli-weight Handicap. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £27,200, compared with £21,148 on the opening day last year —an increase of £ 6,052 for the day. The management of the sport left little to be desired. Notes on the racing, and detailed results. follow: * Waimai Hurdles Ripon Abbey, £399, carried most money in the opening event, but there was a demand for Bourn, £307, Uralla, £222, and Master Roley, £2lO. After some delay they got away, Berinthia leading over the second hurdle opposite the stands from Ripon Abbey, Mangani, Master Roley, Gala Day, Hangawera, Uralla, Bourne, Stormy, and Rahepoto. Down the back Berinthia made a blunder, and Ripon Abbey
was left clear of her, with Mangani, Hangawera, Bourn, Gala Day, Rahepoto, Master Roley, and Stormy following. As they began to turn for home Ripon Abbey was just in front of Mangani, with Rahepoto, Berinthia, Gala Day, Bourn, and Master Roley well up. Mangani was first over the final fence, and he went on to win by two lengths from Stormy (who was at a wonderful price), with Master Roley a length away, being beaten for pace on the flat from the last fence for secondr. money. Rahepoto was a good fourth, and then came Gala Day, Ripon Abbey, Bourn, Berinthia, and Hangawera, with Uralla chasing them home. Trial Stakes There were two divisions in the Trial Plate, 17 in the first and 16 in the second. Betting was well distributed, best supported being Red Lion, £485, the Becalmed —Foreign Fancy bracket, £470, Bert Hinkler, £238, and Black Maire, £2OO. At the start of the first .division—* delayed through Kingsland getting rid of his rider, and cantering round the course—Claremore was left, Foreign Fancy hopping out smartly from Rose Arch, Patere, Kingsland, and The JackJumper. As they started to cross the top, Rose Arch was just in front of Foreign Fancy, with Kingsland, Patere, The Jackjumper, Violation, Valuation, and Valroe at the head of the others, and in this order they turned for home. At the distance Foreign Fancy held command, and stalling off challenges by The Jack Jumper and Becalmed, who came from a long way back, won by a head from the former, with Becalmed (bracketed with the winner) a length away. Rose Arch and Valuation were right up, and then came Kingsland, Patere, Valda, Violation and Muskall Maid. Furrie, who gave some bother in'the birdcage, was left in the second division, Black Maire and Red Lion going out smartest from a bunch. At the head of the field at the end of the first furlong and a-half were Glena Bay and Red Lion, with Arcade. Indolent, Ossian, Nulli Secundus, and Just Nell. Into the straight Red Lion and Black Maire had charge, the latter carrying the favourite out wide, with Indolent shooting for the opening, and Arcade, Ossian, Nulli Secundus, and Just Nell. Indolent hung on well, with Te Ugeru coming fast from the bg.ck, and they dead-heated, a neck in front of Arcade, with Black Maire next. Then came Ossian, Nulli Secundus, and Glena Bay. Tamahere Stakes Flying Prince and Frase.r were taken out of the Tamahere Stakes, the two-year-old race, 1 and in a fair pool Love Call, £784, was better backed than Awamutu, £634, with Gigolo, - £590, at the head of the other quotations. At the start Gigolo and Dalston were badly left, the tapes appearing not to work too well at the r lease. Valstreet hopped out smartly ahead of Love Call, Awamutu, Gay Duke, and Crimesto.r, but before they had gone far the favourite had moved up to the leader. Love Call turned for home a couple of lengths ahead of Awamutu and Valstreet, with Gay Duke, Crimestor, Dalston, and Gigolo, these being strung out. At the bottom of the straight Awamutu challenged Love Call, and an interesting duel ensued, the latter always' having the call, to finally win by a length. Valstreet, who ran about in the straight, was a good four lengths away third, and Gay Duke fourth, being followed by Dalston. Crimestor, and Gigolo. The winner is a smart filly, but Awamutu will be improved by the race. Waikato Cup The big event was ay great betting race, Catkin, £l,lßl, uTe Kara, £Bl9, and Valkon, £794, carrying the big money, with fair support for Mint Leaf, £484, and Corinax, £460. In the rush for positions going out of the straight Transformer secured the lead from Tidal, Catkin, Corinax, Mint Leaf, Valkon, King Smock, Papatu, and Desert Glow with Queen Arch and Te Kara the last pair. Entering the back stretch Transformer was making play from Papatu, Catkin. Corinax, King Smock, Queen Arch, Mint Leaf, Tidal, and Valkon. Te Kara being at the tail. Approaching the half-mile the field
bunched, Queen Arch and Valkon leading across the top from King Smock, Desert Glow, Corinax, Catkin, Papatu, and Mint Leaf, and into the straight Queen Arch and Valkon were together ahead of Corinax, Desert Glow, and Papatu. Valkon was in front soon after straightening up, and then Corinax put in an appearance at the halfdistance. They were level a little further on, and a great tussle ensued between the pair, Corinax obtaining the decision by a neck. Two and ahalf lengths away was Queen Arch, who failed over the final furlong, and Catkin was a good fourth. There was a gap back to Mint Leaf, Desert Glow, and Tidal, with Te Kara, Papatu, and King Smock following, and Transformer last. The pace was on from first to last, the first six furlongs taking 1.19 3-5, the last half-mile being cut out in a slick 51 4-5. Claudelands High-weight Handicap Te Ko.roke, £705, Mcrvette, £661, and Waltzer, £557, were evenly supported in the Claudelands High-weight, with Schorr, £430, at the head of the other quotations. A good start saw Gold Rain and Schorr go out fast from Waltzer, Mervette, Tinopono, Te Koroke, Bright Day, Wenday, Infante, and Golden Krist. At the end of three furlongs Gold Rain was in front of Waltzer, Mervette, Schorr, Tinopono, Bright Day, Te Koroke, and Wenday, Golden Krist making a run when he fell. Crossing the top Waltzer drew clear, and was a length and a-half in front of Schorr at the home turn, next in order being Gold Rain, Te Koroke, Mervette, Tinopono, and Wenday. Schorr quickly collared Waltzer in the straight, and went on to win by a length and a-half. Mervette looked likely to get second money, but Gold Rain finished too strongly, and beat him by a head. Te Koroke was a good fourth, and then came Waltzer, Wenday, Bright Day, and Tinopono, with Infante, who was interfered with when Golden Krist fell, tailed off. Clarkin Hack Handicap / Three defections reduced the field in this race to five, Komak, £691, being favourite, but at a good price, Always, £627, being next in request. At the start Always led out from Loveband, Whakama, Oscar, and Komak, but at the end of a furlong and a-half Whakama went to the front from Oscar, Loveband. and Komak. Oscar was the leader across the top and into the straight from Komak, Loveband, and Always. Once straightened up, Komak hit the front, and halfway up the running Always challenged, Komak winning by a length from Always, Loveband being four lengths away third. Oscar was a half-length away, and Whakama well back. Cambridge Handicap Nine came out for the Cambridge Handicap, the open sprint, and in a good pool favouritism rested with Nancy Lee, £l,OOl, while there was also good support for Kingfield, £943, Tea Time, £BO4, and Whaka King, £450. A walk-in start saw Nancy Lee get all the best of the despatch, and she led out from Tea Time, Ballymoy 11., Kingfield, Regent, Whaka King, and Pegaway. At the end of a couple of furlongs Tea Time was in charge from Nancy Lee, Ballymoy 11., Kingfield, Whaka King, and Pegaway, with Macroom last. Tea Time turned for home clear of Kingfield, Ballymoy 11., Na.ncy Lee, and Whaka King, who were in close order, with Macroom at the head of the others. At the bottom of the straight Nancy Lee had collared the leader and then passed him, and eventually won handsomely from Ballymoy 11. and Pegaway, who were separated by a head. Tea Time was a close fourth, with Macroom, and there was a gap back to Kingfield, and Tinokoa., with Whaka King last. Hautapu Hack Handicap The concluding race saw a boil-over, a hot favourite being beaten into second place. This was Ladies’ Boy, who was entrusted with £1,183, while next in order were Red Day £605 and Abbey Queen £ 561, with a further drop to Speechless. Ladies’ Boy and Abbey Queen led along the back, and at the half-mile the favourite was clear of Abbey Queen, with Speechless. Red Day, Master Lu, Te Waka and Niblick following. The field strung out crossing the top, Ladies’ Boy having a three lengths advantage over Abbey Queen into the straight, with Speechless another three lengths back. Halfway up the running LadivY Boy began to run about, and Speechless put in a good effort, soon to collar him, and going on won easily by three lengths. Master Lu was another three lengths back, with Abbey Queen and Red following. The following are the, results: WAIMAI HANDICAP HURDLES Of £150; 1 i miles 5 MANGANI (H. L. Bradqey and F.
