A bowler is always ready to rush out with a pair of shoes and offer a man a game,” said Mr. A. Harris, M.P., at the opening of the Devonport Bowling Club’s season Weather conditions were ideal and the greens were crowded, the attendance including a large number of visitors from the Auckland and suburban clubs. The Mayor of Devonport, Mr. E. Aldridge, in declaring the season open, congratulated the club on its successful progress, and also Mr. Frank Mason on his election as chairman. He offered his sympathy with the club and the relatives of Mr. Trayes, who was elected president at the annual meeting, but died before he took up office. Mr. Aldridge also congratulated the retiring president, Mr. H. S. W. King, on the results of his two years’ successful work as president. Mr. George Reid, of the Auckland Centre, congratulated Mr. Mason on his election, and the club on its greens, which were among the best in Auckland. Mr. Xiblock stated that although he was accustomed to preaching to con-
gregations he was not so accustomed to talking to bowlers. He considered that the game of bowls with its need for physical and mental skill tended to develop the best in the devotees of the game. A great advantage of the game was also the opportunity it gave for social intercourse, and the enjoyment of comradeship in a healthy sport. Mr. Xiblock took the opportunity of expressing the sympathy of the members with the relatives of Mr. Paterson, an old member of the club whose death occurred reecntly. The decision to hold a pairs tournament on Labour Day ■was also announced. Mrs. Xiblock then threw up the first jack and the green was declared open for the season. R.
