Tramways On Top

Two Soccer Titles Won

STIRRING END-OF-SEASON GAME

NO better conclusion to the t planned than the Tramw ford Park on Saturday afterm Tramways added a popu tion success by securing the strenuous tussle with Ponsonb The score, 3-2, was the beat indication of the irend of play. There was no gainsaying Trams’ clear-cut superiority in genei*ulship in the first spell, when the Ponsonby backs neglected to supply their forwards with the ball. Trammies deserved their 3-1 lead at the interval, although Ponsonby was a shade unlucky once or twice. Rearrangement of team formation and entirely new tactics served Ponies well in the last hall. Tramways failed to keep pace with the opposition, which Avas attacking for most of the spell. BATTY BRILLIANT Had it not been for the brilliant work of Batty as goalie for .he winners, Ponies would have won on tlieir second spell showing. Batty was remarkably agile, and considering. the hot attacks he was subjected to. he showed excellent control. Davis, inside left, opened TrarnAvays’ account Avith a hefty shot which caught the bar, bounced, and rolled into the net. , Before half-time, McElligott and Spong added goals for Trams after bright, concerted play. SteAvurt scored a goal for Ponies after a determined raid. Bustling methods by the atttxckei*s. brought Batty out of his goal. In this short time, a Tramways clearing kick was stopped by Gavan, who quickly transferred to Stewart, and the centreforward had an easy opening. Tramways could not repeat their attacking poAvers in the second spell and their score received no addition. E. Williams slammed home a smart goal for Ponsonby after a persistent attack. The spectators were delighted Avith the sparkling enterprise of Trams in the first spell. Liberally supplied with the ball from the backs, the forwards simply cut holes in the defence. Spong (outside right), Tinkter (inside right) and Davis (inside left) were an active trio, Spong impressing particularly. Fyffie was the pick of the halfbacks, and McElligott and Simpson shone on the defence. Batty gave ,a sterling display of goalkeeping, but most of his hard work was got through in the second spelL PONIES IMPROVE Ponsonby’s backs nursed the forwards more in the second spell. Attack proved to be the most effective defence and Tramways’ energy was stifled. And yet Ponies could not make up the leeway. While Trams’ defence was rock-like, over-eagerness by the Ponies certainly spoiled frequent shots at the net. More often than not, these missed their mark. Innos. , Ponies’ captain and outside right, failed in his many shots at goal. But his work xyas valuable, and his
