Nine Meetings To-day HEAVY RAIN AT CAMBRIDGE
ALTHOUGH six race and three trotting meeting were scheduled to-day, the interest in the Auckland Province was practically confined to the Hunt race meeting at Cambridge and the trots at Whangarei, special trains taking good complements despite the unfavourable weather conditions prevailing early this morning.
WAIKATO HUNT ANNUAL RACE FIXTURE HELD IN HEAYY RAIN Heavy rain was falling at Cambridge when the first event at the annual fixture of the Waikato Hunt Club came up for decision, and the course was heavy. The weather had some effefct on the attendance, which, however, was good under the circumstances. Following are the results: MAIDEN HUNTERS' STEEPLES Of £200; 21 miles. 1— BEN DOWE R, 11.12, Mr. H. Baker 1 : 2 NABOB, 11.8, Mr. Arnold .. .. 2 B—KING FAME, 11.5. Mr. Russell .. 3 Also: 5 Bruntwood, 11 Caruso, 9 Every Day. 7 General Maniapoto. 12 Otumoetai, 3 Raiti Hiki, 10 Roger, 4 Town Ram- j bier, 6 Lucy Bruce. Won by a neck, third horse ten lengths away. Time, 5.7. Winner trained by owner, Hastings. There was a modest pool in the opening event, Bendower £524, Nabob £349 and Haiti Hiki £270 carrying most money. Nabob went out to make the pace, and down the back the last time was attended by Bendower and Town Rambler, with a gap back to General Maniapoto, Roger, King Fame and Raiti Hiki. Coming to the final fence there was little between Nabob and Bendower, King Fame following a dozen lengths away. In a fine finish Bendower beat Nabob by a neck, King Fame securing third money ten lengths away. Town Rambler, General Maniapoto and Caruso followed at intervals. Otumoetai. Also: 4 Air King, 7 Flitter, 9 Bert Hinkler, 2 Upoko, 8 Foreign Fancy, 12 Ktneton, 6 Kingsland, 11 Ossian, 10 ViolaWon < by two lengths, a length and a-half between second and third. Time, 1.26 1-5. Winner trained by G. Johnston, at Matamata. Leitrim was sent out a warm favourite with £604, Upoko £3Bl and The Jack Jumper £378 being evenly supported. Kineton was badly left at the start, Abbey Queen going out fast from Foreign Fancy, Leitrim, The Jack Jumper and Flitter. At the end of a couple of furlongs Leitrim had moved up second to Abbey Queen, following them being Foreign Fancy. The Jack Jumper, Upoko and Air King. This was the order into the straight, Abbey Queen having a length and a-half advantage, but she was soon collared by the favourite, who won easily by two lengths. The Jack Jumper was half a length away, and then came Foreign Fancy, Flitter, Air King, Bert Hinkler and Upoko, HUNTERS' HURDLES, Of £350; 12 miles, 6-—ARCHANGEL, 9.1, R. E. Thomp--I—PIKIMAI,—PIKIMAI, 10.7; M. Conway 2 4 MANGAITI, 9.7, R. Olive 3 Also—s King Arrians, 3 Gold Rep, 2 Ramblin’ Kid, 8 Day Abbey, 7 Rose Arch, 9 Soami. Won by half a length, third horse two lengths away. Time, 2.27 3-5. Winner trained by W. M. Douglas, junr., Cambridge. The Hunters’ Hurdles provided a surprise, Archangel winning and paying double figures. Pikimai, £842, was favourite, and there was good support for Ramblin’ Kid, £747, and Gold Rep, £4Bl. Day Abbey and Rose Arch cleared out from the start, and passing the stand were leading by half a dozen lengths from Archangel, Soami, Ramblin’ Kid, Gold Rep, and Pikimai. Along the back Day Abbey was making play from Archangel, Rose Arch, Gold Rep, Pikimai, and Soami. The favourite here began to make up his ground, and at the home turn was almost up with Archangel, Gold Rep and Mangaiti following. A good finish resulted in Archangel winning by half a length from Pikimai, with Mangaiti a couple of lengths back. Soami was fourth, and Gold Rep and Day Abbey next. MEMBER*’ MEMORIAL HANDICAP Of £450; 1J miles. 3—MINT LEAF, 8.5, C. Goulsbro .. 1 b—DESERr GLOW, 8.3, H. Lee .. 2 5 SIAOSI, 7.10, A. Stead 3 Also: 4 Te Ivoroke, 1 Master Doon, 7 Wedding March, 2 Miss New Zealand. Won by half a length, the same distance separating second and third. Time, .2.21. Winner trained by £3. George. • Backers made no mistake about sending Master Doon out favourite, for he parried £1,194, against Miss New Zealand £914, Mint Leaf £793 and To Ivoroke £49t), the very heavy course undoubtedly influencing investors. To Ivoroke led past the stands from Master Doon, Siaosi, Mint Leaf, Desert Glow, Miss New Zealand and Wedding March. Along the back Master Doon and Siaosi were together in the van, being followed by Te Koroke, Mint Leaf, Desert Glow* and Miss New Zealand. The field bunched as it crossed the top, and Mint Leaf led into the straight from Desert Glow. Miss New Zealand, Master Doon and Siaosi. . Mint Leaf did best to win by half a length from Desert Glow, with Siaosi a similar distance away. To Koroke was fourth, Miss New Zealand and Master Doon next, and Wedding March last.
RACING AT TRENTHAM BEAUMONT TAKES HURDLES ZIPPOR SCORES IN TRIAL (Special to THE'SUN) TRENT HAM, To-day. The Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting concluded to-day in fine weather before a large holiday crowd. The track was in good order. Results:— x SECOND HURDLE HANDICAP Of £300; li miles 5 BEAUMONT, 9.5 .. .. ij 4—ASIvARI, 9.5 .. 2 2—VEXATIOUS, 10.0 3 | All started. Won by three lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time. 2.46. Polyphemus and Vexatious were favourites for the Second Hurdles Handicap. Baliyfarnon and Ripdale fell at the first hurdle, and Carinthia, Askari and Beaumont led through the straight the first time round. Beaumont and Askari took charge along the back from Carinthia, ■ Vexatious, Polyphemus and Pantler. Beaumont was the first to turn for home and he came on to win nicely by three lengths from Askari with Vexatious two lengths away third, and Carinthia fourth. SPRING TRIAL STAKES Of £260; 7 furlongs 4—ZIPPOR, 8.4 1 7—STANCHION, 7.11 .. 2 9 -RABBI. 8.0 3 All started. Won by a length, a head between second and third. Time, 1.29 3-5. In the Spring Trial Stakes, big support came for Jet Black, but he was well beaten after running a fair race. Sir Spear led to the straight from Zippor, Roi de Val, Stanchion, and Pari. Sir Spear was done with below the distance, and Zippor took charge, eventually stalling off a challenge by Stanchion, to win by a length, with Rabbi finishing fast a head away, and Last Mark fourth. ' TARARUA HANDICAP Of £260; 1 mile . 2—-HISTORIC, 8.9 .. 1 1— -MBNDIP, 9.0 2 13-RORYMOR, 7.0 .. 3 Scratched: Charmaline, Ot,aura Lass. Won by a head, a neck between second and third. Time, 1.415. Mendip was a better favourite than Historic for the Tararua Handicap, and there was a good backing for several others, so that all but Mendip were at good prices. Rory Mor led all the way to the- straight from Mendip. Royal Lineage, Historic, and Tanagra, and a great race home saw Historic get up to win by a head from Mendip, with Rory Mor a neck away, third. Moo.rgas was a close fourth, and Spearmiss was fifth. ROSENEATH HANDICAP Of £400; b furlongs 6—PASSBOOK, 7.5 1 2 BQUITANT, 7.5 .. .. 2 —ADMIRAL DRAKE, 5.9 3 Scr.: Sapient.
