ROAD IMPROVEMENT

WAITEMATA COUNCIL’S POLICY WORK FOR COMING MONTHS A deputation headed by Sir George Fowlds asked the Waitemata County Council yesterday for a poll of ratepayers in the Waitakerc mountain road area, in order to have the road surfaced in bitumen for a distance of about two miles. Sir George said the engineer’s estim-. ate of the cost was £2,290. One ratepayer was willing to contribute £250, and it Was hoped to obtain £SOO from the City Council, as well as a Government grant for the purpose. The chairman, Mr. A. INI. Laing, said that the poll would be held provided the formalities were completed. Reading proposals for the coming months were reported upon by the engineer, Mr! A. Murray. He said that representations had been made to the Auckland City Council about the state of tho Exhibition Drive. It was intended to have the road thoroughly repaired. It had been decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board to raise a loan of £2,400, partly for work on the Lincoln Road main highway and partly for the reconstruction of Crowe’s Bridge. A total of £2,100 would be spent on the AucklandHelensville main highway. Loan proposals would shortly be placed before ratepayers for the reconstruction of the main highway through the Brigham’s Creek district, the rebuilding of a number of bridges and the resurfacing of several short important roads in the territory. The Main Highways Board surveyors had been engaged in surveying the HuapaiRewit.i Road, with a view to obtaining an estimate for reconstruction and sealing at some future date. The Marino Department had been provided with plans and proposals for the sinking of the hulk Aotea. adjacent to the Helensville Bridge abutment, for protective purposes, but no advice had yet been received on the feasibility of the scheme. The Main Highways Board had checked and passed for payment claims for construction and maintenance of main highways approximating £7,200, and the county funds would benefit to that extent.
