DELICIOUS APPLE TREES

In Canada experience proves that Delicious apple trees require somewhat heavier pruning than the avei-age variety to give the increased vigour necessary for maximum fruitsetting. This means moderate to heavy annual pruning, says F. S. Howlett, associate horticulturist of the Ohio Experiment Station. Bearing trees of the Delicious variety often fail to set fruit as heavily as desired. Fruit-setting studies at the Ohio Station indicate that this is due to the fact that many flowers of the variety cannot set fruit, no matter how well pollinated. Increases brought about by heavy pruning are more likely to give the desired heavy commercial crop than any other vigour-producing practice. Apples of large size and colour are particularly desirable in the Delicious, as small and poorly-coloured fruit of this variety are of -inferior quality. This is another reason for thorough pruning. The pruning, Dr. Howlett says, should not consist of the heading back and cutting out of large limbs, but a general thinning throughout the trees.
