Auckland’s Summer Show
New Features Introduced . r j Additional Classes THE 1928 fixture of the Auckland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association, set down for November 23 and 24, promises to be one of the most successful in its history. Several new and attractive features have been introduced to the schedule, and indications are that entries will be little short of Royal Show strength. Exhibits of several of the recent high-priced importations have been promised.
The schedule, which is now available to breeders, has been subjected to a thorough revision, and contains many new' features—features which should prove an additional attraction to exhibitors, and greatly enhance the value of the show from the visitor's point of view. North Island championships will be allotted' again this year in the sheep, cattle, and pig sections wherever it does not interfere with arrangements previously made by the breed societies concerned. A welcome addition to the championship class will be the Frlesians. The society controlling this breed has granted its North Island championship to 'Auckland for the season, and the result should be a very attractive class of black and white. In fact, there is quite a likelihood, considering the increasing popularity of the breed in this province, that it will prove one of the most attractive classes of its kind yet held in the Dominion. Always a strong class, breeders of Jerseys are receiving additional inducement to come forward through special cash prizes donated by the New Zealand Jersey Council and the Jersey Breeders’ Association. A class for Red Polls Is being introduced in response to inquiries from the growing number of breeders throughout the province. Beef breeders are to be catered for more extensively, and separate classes for Herefords and Aberdeen Angus have been introduced. Breeders of lambs for tho overseas markets will receive additional Inducement to come forward as the result of an offer by the Auckland Farmers’ Frozen Meat Company to donate £9 9s for a special pen of three two-tooth Southdown rams.
Owing to the lack of support given the section in past years, classes for thoroughbreds have been eliminated from the horse section, but additional pony classes have been provided, and a special cash prize will be allocated to the horse that can break the Auckland high jump record of 6ft lin. Among the features that should have considerable attraction for the
general public will be four special competitions arranged by the Third Auckland Mounted Rifles. Steer riding, for which 15 quiet steers have been promised, should also attract large crowds. In every section there has been a concerted endeavour on the part of the show committee to brighten up
the fixture and make it increasingly worth while for the exhibitor to come forward. From the general public’s point of view, also, the show will have greatly enhanced attractions. This year it has been arranged to concentrate all classes on the one ground with a view to having something before the public all the time, and eliminating the need of moving from one field to another. It is to be hoped that breeders and the general public alike will respond to the efforts made by the association and make the fixture what it deserves to be—one of the summer features of the province, and one which young and old alike should support.
