British Producers are Adapting Works of Contemporary Novelists

THE important strides being- taken by British lilm producers are indicated clearly in the latest report from the bulletin of the Department of Overseas Trade.

Among an interesting number of new British pictures recently shown to the trade may be mentioned “Palais de Danse,” in which Mabel Poulton, one of the most successful of the new British film stars, appears, it says. Anthony Asquith, who will be remembered for his first picture “Shooting Stars,” has now produced, as well as written. “Underground,” the scenes

of which are mainly laid on the London Underground Railways, the plot being of melodramatic quality. "The Passing of Mr. Quinn” is an adaptation of a murder story from a novel by Agatha Christie. The

cast includes Stewart Rome and Ursula Jeans.

Ivor Novello appears in “A South Sea Bubble,” also adapted from a novel. The picture contains an element of adventure and melodrama and includes some good scenes taken on a ship and on a South Sea Island. “Not Quite a Lady” is a comedy adapted from a stage play, “The Cassilis Engagement.” The film deals with modern life and includes scenes in a country house as well as some incidents in a cabaret. The actresses include Barbara Gott and Mabel Poulton.

A picture of another type is “Bolibar,” in which the leading actress is Elissa Landi. The story is a romance of the Peninsular war and includes some good scenes in a Spanish town. The atmosphere of the period is well caught, adds the report.

Fuller-Hay ward Theatres completed recently an unusually large contract for British films and have obtained no fewer than 52 pictures of the firstclass for their circuit.
