New Cargo Ship Due in Auckland
KARAMEA’S ARRIVAL ' PASSAGE FROM LONDON Carrying cargo for discharge at Auckland and Wellington, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's Karamea will arrive this afternoon after her maiden voyage from London. A number of passengers are on the Karamea, which is commanded by Captain Mclntosh. She is a sister ship to Zealandic, Taranaki and Coptic, all comparatively new vessels, which have already visited Auckland. Karamea is the latest of this Shaw. Saville quartet, built in the order named, for trade from England. They are the highest-powered motor cargo ships in the wrorld and have a speed of 15 knots, driven by 7,450 h.p. power plants.
She was built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company, and, with her sister ships, is considered to form a class which is fully representative of the modern type of fast, refrigerated cargo vessel. An unusually large amount of refrigerating space is provided. The gross tonnage of Karamea is 11,190, and the dead-weight capacity is 10,390 tons. She has limited but luxurious accommodation for passengers.
