Sullivan, that the Finance Committee of the City Council had decided to make available at once a sum of £ 4,000 for the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee, and to apply at once to the Government for a subsidy of £I,OOO. For this purpose a sum of £2,70u is being transferred from the district fund account, and £1,300 is being taken from the Halswell Quarries account. Instructions have been given to the city engineer to increase the number of men on relief work. With regard to the application for a subsidy, Mr. Sullivan said that last year there had been no provision made for a Government subsidy on money spent by local bodies out of revenue for relief works. Just before the beginning of the session, however, the Government announced that such a subsidy would bo paid and would be on a basis of 50 per cent, on 12s a day for married men, and on 9s a day for single men. On this basis, Mr. Sullivan calculated that the council would be entitled to £I,OOO.
