“FIRST-GRADE BUTTER”

GROCER’S MISLEADING NOTICE S.M. WARNS TRADE The first case of its kind was heard at the Police Court to-day when E. Hellawell pleaded guilty to publishing a false statement in regard to the sale of butter. Mr. V. X. Hubble, prosecuting for the Health Department, referred to a nptice displayed in Hellawell’s window which' had read: “First Grade Creamery Butter, Is 7d.” An inspector had gone into the shop in Karangahape Road and asked for a pound of the same butter as that displayed in the window. He had been given the butter out of a box labelled "second grade.” “The prosecution was originally brought merely as a warning, but defendant is going from bad to worse, and his latest effort is a notice: 'Best Butter, Is od,’ which is obviously incorrect as finest-grade butter is several pence a pound dearer than that,” concluded counsel. It was explained that the offending notice had been removed. Mr. Hellawell was not used to handling bulk butter and had been mislead by the merchants. “I am quite prepared to believe that defendant did not intend to deceive,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., "so will fine him £l. Just to call the attention of other grocers to the prosecution.
