FILMS FOR AUSTRALIA

BRITAIN PLEASED WITH QUOTA MR. MARKS AT HOME (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.20 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. Mr. Walter Marks (Australia) conferred at length with Sir Philip Cun-liffe-Lister, president of the Board of Trade, who is gratified with Australia's excellent quota plan to help British films. Mr. Marks ascertained that British studios for the current year were preparing 100 films, on which £3,500,000 is being spent; but the British talking-

films machine is not perfected. Experts are busily experimenting on it. It was recognised that the use of the American machines meant only American films. Mr. Marks leaves on October 22 to inspect the Parisian and Berlin studios. Thence he goes to the United States. He will spend a fortnight at Hollywood. He arrives by the Aorangi at Sydney on January 5. Mr. Marks was chairman of the Australian Film Commission.
